How to choose a suitable AC motor according to the load conditions

1. Determine the load characteristics
Load type:
Constant torque load: During the operation of this type of load, the torque remains basically unchanged and is independent of the speed. For example, cranes, conveyors, etc. For constant torque loads, it is necessary to select a motor with a large torque output capacity.
Variable torque load: The load torque changes with the speed. Such as fans, water pumps, etc. The torque required for variable torque loads at different speeds is different, so it is necessary to select a motor suitable for speed regulation.
Impact load: The load will have a large impact force in a short period of time, such as stamping machines, crushers, etc. For impact loads, the motor needs to have sufficient overload capacity and mechanical strength.
Load size:
Accurately calculate the power required by the load. According to the working requirements of the load, various factors such as friction, gravity, inertia, etc. are considered to calculate the power required by the load in different working stages. For example, for cranes, it is necessary to consider the power requirements in different stages such as lifting, running, and braking.
Determine the peak power and average power of the load. Peak power is the maximum power that the load may have in a short period of time, while average power is the average power consumption of the load over a period of time. When selecting a motor, ensure that its rated power can meet the average power demand of the load, and have a certain overload capacity to cope with peak power.
2. Select the type of motor
Asynchronous motor:
Advantages: simple structure, low cost, high reliability, and easy maintenance. Suitable for most general load conditions, especially constant torque loads and variable torque loads with low speed regulation requirements.
Disadvantages: low efficiency and relatively low power factor when running at low speed. It may not be the best choice for occasions that require frequent speed regulation or high efficiency requirements.
Synchronous motor:
Advantages: high efficiency, high power factor, and stable speed. Suitable for large loads with high efficiency and power factor requirements, such as compressors, water pumps, etc. Superior performance when running at constant speed.
Disadvantages: complex structure, high cost, and difficult control. A special excitation system is required, and the stability requirements of the power grid are high.
Permanent magnet synchronous motor:
Advantages: high efficiency and power density, small size and light weight. Wide speed regulation range and fast response speed. Suitable for occasions with limited space and high efficiency and performance requirements, such as electric vehicles, CNC machine tools, etc.
Disadvantages: The cost is relatively high, and the permanent magnet may be demagnetized by factors such as high temperature and vibration. The control technology requirements are also high.
3. Consider the motor parameters
Power:
Select the appropriate motor power according to the power demand of the load. Generally speaking, the rated power of the motor should be slightly greater than the average power of the load to ensure sufficient margin during normal operation. At the same time, the overload capacity of the motor should be considered to cope with possible peak loads.
Speed:
Determine the speed of the motor according to the working requirements of the load. For loads that require high-speed operation, select a high-speed motor; for loads that require low-speed and high-torque, select a motor with a lower speed or use a reduction device to meet the requirements.
Voltage and frequency:
Select the appropriate voltage and frequency according to the actual power supply conditions. The power supply standards in different regions and industries may be different. Ensure that the motor can operate normally at a given voltage and frequency.
Protection level and insulation level:
Select the protection level and insulation level of the motor according to the requirements of the working environment. If the working environment is harsh, such as dusty, humid, high temperature, etc., it is necessary to select a motor with a higher protection level and insulation level to ensure its reliability and safety.
4. Conduct an economic analysis
Initial cost:
Consider the purchase price of the motor, installation costs, and the cost of supporting equipment. The prices of motors of different types and specifications vary greatly. On the premise of meeting the load requirements, choose a motor with high cost performance.
Operation cost:
Analyze the operating efficiency, energy consumption, and maintenance cost of the motor. Although the initial cost of an efficient motor may be high, it can save a lot of energy costs in long-term operation. At the same time, motors with low maintenance costs can reduce downtime and repair costs.
Life cycle cost:
Compare the initial cost, operating cost, and expected service life of the motor to calculate the life cycle cost of the motor. Choose the motor with the lowest life cycle cost to maximize economic benefits.
